Challenges in Providing Management Strategies for Networked Systems

It is clear that the networking technological elements such as network devices and applications could operate more efficiently if their characteristics are know and/or are made available to the concerned decision makers (Zabir, 2001).However, the measurement and evaluation of network performance has been a challenging issue because of the inherent uncertainty and the relevant influences of different components within the complex networked systems. Abstract--This paper presents a review of current management strategies for networked systems, followed by a discussion of the issues involved in providing Quality of Service guaranteed management strategies. An integrated program for conducting management strategies in networked system that incorporates multi-disciplinary methods is outlined and a case study is discussed. It is the authors’ belief that such an integrated multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary approach will generate fruitful results. On the other hand, management strategy aims at achieving or balancing the often-conflicting goals of the parties involved in the use of the distributed system. For instance, in practice, there is a trade-off between resource consumption by the management activity and the time it takes for a result to be collected. From the viewpoint of decision making, since this kind of trade-off can be seen as a series of interrelated activities that is driven by decisions, as a consequence, adapting the decision making process in networked systems management can be regarded as a significant improvement means of the quality of management so as to achieving management process improvement.
